A special event celebrating the traditional handmade cha guo, a Qingming Festival delicacy and recognized item of intangible cultural heritage, was held in Dameisha Village in Yantian on April 1. The initiative, aimed at promoting cultural preservation through hands-on experience, brought together grandparents, parents, and children to explore the art of cha guo making.

Distinct from the sweet green rice balls popular in the Jiangnan region, Dameisha’s cha guo features a broader variety of ingredients and offers both sweet and savory flavors, reflecting the area’s unique culinary traditions.

At 9 a.m., teachers from Meisha Kindergarten led students to the event site. The workshop was guided by Master Mo, a veteran artisan and official inheritor of the local intangible cultural heritage. With decades of experience, Master Mo provided detailed explanations about the origins, cultural significance, and traditional techniques of cha guo making.

Participants were divided into groups, and under Master Mo’s guidance, began the hands-on process. Children, assisted by their parents and grandparents, juiced herbs and mixed the extract with brown sugar, blending it into glutinous rice flour to form dough.

Organizers stated that the event successfully combined cultural education with community involvement, highlighting the importance of participation in preserving and passing on local heritage.
